Don't fall in!

Herman Miller
I saw this picture in an article about the Herman Miller collection and was drawn to the mid-century iconic look. The huge windows and roaring fire were enticing too but then I tried to imagine myself, my family, or a group of my friends in the room. Would we all sit on oddly low stools and color? Or would the over 40 set (myself included) ever be able to launch their rears out of those sleek but deep black chairs? Can you really imagine sitting anywhere comfortably in this room with a cup of coffee or a martini?
I have problems with it.

Hahaha, yes us 40-somethings are a bit more practical these days. I could not set my coffee on that side table because I could not reach it once I was sitting down. I am surprised by how much I love the old mid-century homes. About 8 years ago, I would think....who wants to live in that dated thing.

I don't think I could begin to get up out of those chairs or sit comfortably on the stools. It is a nice look but it sure doesn't look like it would be the type of room for a family.

Funny story: My grandfather came to visit me once after I had gotten married. We had this old horsehair sofa that sat really low to the ground. He sat down on it and when it was time for him to leave, he could not get out of it!! I had to pull him up out of it! Ha He was laughing as much as I was!

ya - agreed that I love the room and not the furnishings. Not comfortable OR good looking!

Looks kind of cool and I'd bet the chairs are rather comfy but not a very functional room.

The room at least needs a Mid-Century-Modern
sofa and maybe a coffee table to go with
the sofa. Who has just chairs in the living
or family room?

Comfort and function should trump everything else - and it's a little too extreme for me. I like a mix that feels warm!

I would feel that, at any second, a nurse in a white smock would come out and call my name to summon be into the back room mazes where my doctor awaits...
