So far in this little challenge I have finished most of my framing.
I decided to post a video tutorial to show you how to cut a mat and frame prints or photos yourself. To be totally honest I did the videos because I was dreading trying to type out a clear explanation with photos.
I have never made videos of myself so please be kind, they are not perfect.
It was, to a small degree, a comedy of errors. The first segment was done while my little one napped so I had to scramble. After I put on really thick hooker makeup (if you don't you look barefaced and washed out), I cleaned up threw things in a pile behind the shelf that is behind me. You will notice I didn't do a very good job. Hahaha! They are visible on the floor in the shot. I really only had time to do it once and my head is cut off. Ack!
There were lighting issues so I moved things in to the dining room and made my husband take the little one out for the second segment that I filmed yesterday. That did not stop the phone from ringing or my 17 year old from coming out of his hole bedroom to eat breakfast... at 4:30 folks! Whatever. I finally got one done that I liked could deal with.
Here are a few close ups so you have a clue as to what I am talking about when you watch the video.
Ask any questions in the comment section and I will answer it there so everyone can see.
I'll be back with the finished room and a cost breakdown next Thursday.
Oops, blogger won't let me put anything below the video so I almost forgot to link up with all of the other motivators in this challenge.

Without further ado...This relates to the measurements on the mat margins that I talk about |
That is the stop line on the cutting blade that I mention |
These are explained in the 2nd framing portion |

Love that you made a video! Easy to refer to in the future!
Great Video Kerry! Im so impressed. I used to have that same matt cutter and I must have thrown it out, sadly. Boy, I wish I had it back now. I love your citrine-ish curtains behind you.
Good luck on everything! Looks like you're well on your way.

Thank you for sharing so much detail - you certainly know what you are doing! I do not own a mat cutter but it helps to know how to use one.
Great video. You are so knowledgeable. I want a mat cutter....I have no need, but I want one!
You did such a good job on your video! And I LOVE your curtains in the background! I can't wait to see everything all framed up!
Great job, Kerry! Its pretty self-explanatory. Now, I just need to buy the matt-cutter.
Great video... very clear and easy to understand! Great job on the matting!
This is so great that you made a video! My husband's a finance guy, but got a minor in studio arts. He cuts all our mats which saves so much money. Custom framing is crazily expensive!
THis was perfect timing for me- I was ONLY TODAY thinking how in the world do you cut a mat fo' real? Thanks so much for the awesome tut!

What a fabulous tutorial Kerry! This makes total sense to DIY if you have lots to frame. Can't wait to see everything done and hung!

Great tutorial. I've always wished I knew how to cut my own mats because they can get really expensive. Now I suppose I just need a mat cutter :)
Finally got around to viewing the tutorial. Great info and will save me lots of money!
