As much as I find the mod, funky, boho mix exhilarating, I find the traditional, symmetrical, predictable supremely comforting. Oh and that chic clutter is heavenly...as long as someone else does the dusting.

I had to. I am sorry, its just that when I scroll through Pinterest my eyes glaze over from the familiarity. Boring, boring, boring!

When I saw this image, that is admittedly not an entire room, it both delighted and repulsed me.

I'd say this decorator is in the "go big or go home" camp.

Great rug, great mantelpiece, warm wood table, ecclesiastical art and....

I wish I could see more of the space, mostly so I could understand the choice of chairs.

Yes! A resounding "Yes" to the layered art, the rug, and the mid-century piece but something is making me uncomfortable. I feel like it is one of my teenagers' rooms and I want to say ,"Get that crap up off the floor!" Lived in is cool, junk piled under a dresser is not. Am I right?

I am not sure that I love this space but I do love the different textures. The Moroccan blankets, modern side tables and tiled ceiling are all keepers in my book.

I am sure you are thinking, WTF, Kerry.  I never called this "prettiest room of the week".

Truth is that I am feeling a little ornery and wanted to post this to show you that its not a new idea to use books with color-coordinated covers as decor. Its an old stupid idea.
I confess I am guilty of it. I did it in my daughter's room, so it's her fault.

You have probably seen this image before. What I find most divine is the masterful way symmetry and asymmetrical  pieces act in harmony. The mostly monochromatic walls and textiles allow the art of different size and color to work anyway.

Also, I want that Jan Showers coffee table really badly.

This is what I call camping.

 I do not not camp but if I had a lovely little retreat like this, I would call it camping.

It would also make a magnificent art studio.

Now that's commitment!

 Beautiful, ancient commitment to decor. Notice how the mirror and landscape painting are separate but integral to the plasterwork. Clearly, the notion of "changing things up" was not considered necessary. 

Luckily, the colors and furnishings are divine.

I am so glad to get back to my weekly Wednesday feature, room of the week. So here are my two cents.

I am not big on monochromatic decor but I do like serene bedrooms so I understand these choices although I find this a bit one note. The thing I am intrigued with is the enormous art above the bed. I love the statement it makes in a way that does not interrupt the calm of the space.

If I did not have a high four poster with a headboard that leaves about three feet between it and the ceiling, I would be stretching a huge canvas for my room instead of typing this.

So...who wants a huge painting in their room? Raise your hand!

 I have no opinion, just envy this week. I envy weather so warm that one must dine under cover during the day.

Its really freakin' cold here in Virginia today.

To me this looks like a villain's lair. The hooded chair looks rife for plotting. Aside from that, it has a groovy lamp and a table that I would enjoy having but notice the trompe l'oeil walls. One corner has a classic Greco-Roman figure and the other seem to have a portrait in a later style.

Swiss cheese ceiling aside, I would love to meet in a board room with  vibrant art that refuses to be ignored.

Its a far cry from the typical framed print hanging like a lonely postage stamp.

It really makes me wonder what is on the other wall.

We all know the fabulous Miles Redd and this is a much seen Miles room.

It occurred  to me that the chair hoarders among us (I might be the Queen of chair hoarding) would take comfort in the disparate yet lovely collection in this room.

I think its best to refer to the habit as "chair collecting". Those without a discerning eye call it hoarding.

Delicious caramel colored leather and pale blue walls with ceilings that appear quite tall are what I like best here. I am of the opinion that over sized black and white galleries of photos are over done but this application gets a pass from me for the convincing vintage look.

Room of the week

This week I chose what appears to be a darling kitchen. It seems to have everything pretty, artwork, white cabinets, some glass fronts, diamond patterned floor with a Persian rug atop, antiques add up to a big dose of charm. The one thing it does not have is square footage.

Personally, it would take one holiday meal in a tiny kitchen to put me over the edge. I would be in a rubber room or jail cell.

Does size matter?
