To paint or not to paint

The entryhall , with it's 18 foot ceiling, is now painted. Thanks to Mr. Designdumonde and his ladder bravery. As I put it back together I see flaws.

Those orange floors will just have to have another Oriental rug on them so that they are less, well, there and that fugly orange banister has a date with some white paint but it is my little desk that I wonder about.

I like painted furniture in small doses. I feel like they are fun accents but plan for the look to become dated so my favorite things likely won't ever be painted. I like this desk but its not a family heirloom.I am leaning towards painting it a glossy color. My first go-to is black but I have a bamboo chest painted black just steps away from this. There is always gray but I don't want to max out the gray in my house, if that is even possible. I really would only consider those two colors. Yes, me the color lover doesn't want a color on this. I just don't want to hate a year from now and I don't want it to be a problem in the new house.

So, help! What color do I paint it? Or do I paint it at all?
Those bits that look like inlay are what drew me to the piece but they are just applied either paint or stain.

P.S. We painted the walls SW Repose Gray at 50% and love it! The hallway, family room and kitchen are all getting painted the same color too.

For this piece I would definitely leave it as is. One you put in the rug you mentioned I think it will look great.

I don't think I would paint it. It's beautiful as is. Just add some colorful accessories to the top - or a small painting. I think if you paint it, later you'll regret it.

I wonder if it wouldn't look smashing in the world's deepest navy blue?

I would leave it. It has such classic beauty! Maybe a colorful upholstered chair slightly tucked. (Leave it a little a little "untucked" to feel welcoming) I think that would be lovely

I would leave it. If you do paint, I vote for the blue Raina suggested. BTW, consider painting the stair railing black. I think it would look awesome.

The patina abounds even in the photos and the inlays are gorgeous details I would hate to see covered up. I vote to leave it as is.

Please do not cover up this beautiful and timeless mahogany piece.

Kerry I would say leave it for now at least until you move. You can always paint it later if you want!

Kerry I think once the staircase rails are white it will look good as it is. However, if you still feel you must paint I think a deep navy blue would be fabulous!

AS much as I love painted furniture, I would leave this as is. Lovely, classic! It will look great once another oriental rug is in place.

It's beautiful as is, but if painted I would definitely do something with a lacquered finish. Love that on older pieces. x

Once you paint the railing, the wood tone on this piece will look richer. I vote no paint!
