ORC linking party-Teen room refresh

I am sure you know this event well, but if not it is hosted by the lovely Linda from Calling it Home.

Yesterday the official One Room Challenge began and today the rest of us get to throw our hats in.
I will be doing my 16 year-old daughter's room, although she will turn 17 before its over provided she relinquishes control to me.
I hemmed and hawed about doing her room because a.) she has opinions b.) she did not get the design gene and c.) she is fickle. So fickle that sunburst mirrors hung at the right height have been replaced by paintings dangling far too high from the floor among other bizarre changes.
It goes like this, I find a solution for her room, she approves, I purchase and a week later it is in the closet in favor some goofy mock-up. All of this does not sit so well with me, so call me mean but, going forward she will be consulted minorly and forbidden to change things.

We need a desk and chair situation here and for goodness sakes less crap everywhere!

These desks are my inspiration.

I need a storage solution here. Ugh!

I am not entirely awful as I am planning a gallery wall that includes some framed "permanent" pieces and and some that are easy to change out on a whim.

Right now she hangs her own watercolors from her Etsy shop along with sweet little pictures made by her little sister in this spot.
Her color scheme so far has been gray, yellow black, greige and red. Yup, I said red so you can see why an intervention of the strongest sort is in order.
Here is the plan:
  • Desk and chair situation resolved
  • Implement new color scheme
  • Find storage for records
  • Find storage for cosmetics
  • Create gallery wall
  • Accessorize within new color scheme
Head on over to Calling it Home to see what the other participants are up to and come back next week to see my progress.

Oh man, are we in for it! I'm working on my 13 yr old daughter's room. At least I am at the moment, but I might ditch this client before next week and do the room of my 12 yr old mamma's boy. Good luck! I know it will be awesome! :)

I think in the end she'll be really happy with what you do. Keep reporting on the dynamics too - I think that will be so informative as well! Oh, and I agree w/Nancy above about the skin care tips!

Looking forward to how you solve the storage solution. Love the idea of an art wall with both permenant and change-out pieces. Sounds like something that will make you both happy;)

Great inspirations! It is going to look amazing! I love that your daughter has an Etsy shop, I have been bugging my son to start one with his art and he is not going on board with that idea. Have a productive week!

I love all the parsons desk inspiration. I'm thinking about changing up my 9 year old daughter's room so I can't wait to see how your daughter's room turns out. I need some inspiration of my own. :)

It's fun to see those that do teen rooms. They certainly do have opinions so I always like to see these rooms evolve.

Tiffany said...

Wow, she has her own Etsy shop? I'm excited to see how her room comes along.

I think this will be a real challenge Kerry. Reading about your daughter, and I guess all teen daughters are like that at some point, you just do what you can! I know in the end, with your great eye, she will love her room. Excited to follow along!

So impressive that your 16 year old has an Etsy shop. Such a go-getter! Good luck with the room transformation :)

Do I not envy you and the Drama Years. I say tread lightly. And only use what you will want to put in that room in a few years. Why not make this more of a studio room to support her Etsy store that could become more studio when she leaves home?

Krystine @ www.KrystineEdwards.com said...

A teengagers room, that should be its own challenge! Love your plans!

Unknown said...

Well now she did get the artistic gene!! After painting my daughter's room I gave up. Easier to just shut the door. Good luck Kerry!!

Good luck to you! I'm years away from my girls being teenagers, but always on the look out for fresh ideas! Love the desk too! Impressed with your daughter's artwork!

This will be a good project for you two. She's caught the design bug for sure. You guys will make it look great (and hopefully with minimal eye rolling on her part) :)
